Abraham Lincoln is the most famous and revered US president in history. He is revered for being "the president who saved America", probably correctly. He was born in 1809 into a farming family and his mother Nancy Hanks was a psychic medium. She is also the great-great-great grandmother of the actor Tom Hanks who’s famous for being in films like Forrest Gump and Castaway (I wonder if her psychic abilities have passed on to her thespian descendant! If so, he’s keeping quiet about it!). She died when Abraham was just 9 years old and his father remarried. Lincoln got into politics at a young age and was elected to the Illinois Assembly. He stood for the Republicans in 1860 and was elected the 16th US president in November. Like Winston Churchill in the century after, he won his greatest acclaim for being a wartime leader. He crushed the rebel south and disbanded the Confederate States of America. If he hadn’t then the USA would have probably fallen apart forever, making the future world a very different place.
